If you get lost while hiking:
Stay together-don't split up if you get lost from a larger group.
Don't wander-as soon as you realize you are lost, stop and stay where you are. Find a good place to sit in sight of the trail, don't hide.
Keep Warm-don't take off any clothes, put on a sweater or your poncho and keep your head covered.
Attract Attention by tooting your whistle now and then. A whistle is loud and requires very little energy and air to blow.
Do Not lay directly on the ground. Always make a bed of leaves and branches to keep your body from coming into contact with the ground-this will keep you warmer.
Don't eat anything you are not sure of.
Stay away from water. Lake water can be contaminated and you could drown. If you have to seek out water, use a small stream, or even better-look for pools of rainwater on rocks and leaves.
