Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark
How to get there:
(from the site) From I-65 take I-59 North to the 22nd Street exit. Turn left
onto 1st Avenue North. Cross the viaduct (Sloss Furnaces is on the right). Turn
left onto 34th Street. Turn left onto 2nd Avenue North. Turn left onto 32nd
Street North. Turn right into the Sloss Furnaces entrance under the viaduct.
These are good directions, it is easy to find. I would add that you drive straight
across the road on 32nd Street North, where it comes to a stop sign. The directions
sound as if you make a right there, but the entrance is right across the road.
Park under the viaduct.
(there are signs at each turn)
What to expect:
It is free, there are nice bathrooms,
picnic area and you can hold events there if you so desire. There are guided
tours-see website link above for more info-as well as self-guided walking tours.
Wear good walking shoes, bring your camera-the place is really cool for photos-and
wear a hat if it is sunny that day.
There is a 12-minute slide show you can watch and then tour the grounds. Look
for the frog, Spot's grave, and see if you can find the names of the mules that
worked there. ; )
