The Huntsville Times offers tours to homeschool groups. If you go on Friday mornings, you get to see the press running. Informative and interesting for all ages. Contact Gladys Oaks @ 256-532-4494. There is no charge for tour.
Suggestion: let the kids place a free ad using the "3 For Free" Promotion and try to sell one of their unwanted toys or other belongings, then watch for the ad to come out in the newspaper.

Monte Sano State Park is free, but they have a honor system of $1 per person (under 5 free) to use the picnic/playground parking area.

Has several properties that have hiking trails and are free and open for hiking.

Harrison Brothers Hardware on the Square downtown Huntsville
Not really a "tour" but a spot that's cool to visit, and free. Crowded
with both old hardware stuff and all ranges of gifts. Run by a
foundation and volunteers. May be hard to keep kids' hands off
things... have to pay for parking in downtown Huntsville. Follow it up
with walking down to Big Springs and wading in the spring and feeding
the ducks.

Big Spring Park is free
From I-65 (North or South) take Exit 340 to Huntsville I-565 headed East. Travel approximately 19 miles to exit 19A South Memorial Parkway (231 South). As you merge into Memorial Parkway take the first exit, Clinton Street. Loop around to the red light, and turn right on to Clinton Street.
Entering Huntsville from 72 West
(from Scottsboro), take exit 19-A to Jefferson Street after 72 West merges into I-565. Follow Jefferson Street to the first red light at Monroe Street, and turn right.
Coming in from Guntersville
, 431 West will become Governors Drive. Follow Governors Drive across California Street and past Huntsville Hospital on your right. Turn right at the traffic light onto Monroe Street.

Huntsville Art Museum is 1/2 price on Thursday nights. The Museum is free on the first Friday of the month.

Madison County Waste to Steam Plant
Free.
On Triana Blvd. in Huntsville, not far from the Recyclery run by
BFI. You can tour both in the same day.
