Caney Falls Hike (Photos)
How to get there:
From the junction of 278 and Hwy 33 N in Double Springs.
Drive north on 33 N 3-4 miles. Keep an eye out on the left for CR 2. Turn Left
and drive 3.7 miles to the trailhead. Close to the parking area on the left
will be a big chicken house. Start looking on the right for a very small mowed
area on the side of a hill. There is a sign-post stick with nothing on it (5-2005)
and a gate within sight of the road. Park here and follow the trail beyond the
gate
What to expect:
There is no parking fee or day use fee
The trail is 3/4 mile to the falls.
I have read it is a hard trail and I have had more than one person say, "Oh,
Caney-that was a LONG trail!" I have to be bewildered. I hiked it with
three kids, 5-9 and no one complained. It can't be that long or difficult.
The trail itself starts out a little rough as it has been rerouted through Ivan-damaged
trees. It soon joins back up with the 'real' trail and it very easy walking.
There is a long hill, and to get down to the falls pool is a little steep (below
is a picture of the steep part)
The stream above is very pretty and smooth. Below, the pool is not very big, but makes a nice natural swimming area. The whole area is covered in hemlock, laurel and rhododendron.
